How it’s calculated
To receive an exact amount, add the fixed fee and divide by one minus the percentage fee. Simply adding the percentage on top leaves you slightly short.
Worked example
To receive exactly $500 when the fee is 2.9% plus $0.30, charge $515.25. The fee on that charge is about $15.24, which is more than 2.9% of $500.

Questions
Can I pass payment fees on to clients?
In many places yes, if it is disclosed upfront, but some countries and card networks restrict surcharging. Check the rules where you and your client are.
Why isn't adding 2.9% enough?
The percentage is charged on the larger, grossed-up amount, so you need to divide rather than add.
Doing these numbers every month? Accounting software can automate invoices, reminders and tax reports.
